Ant Control

The ant on your counter tells us where the nest is. Odorous house ants — the ones that give off a sharp coconut-or-blue-cheese smell when crushed — are the most common spring caller in Hagerstown, and they run tight lines along countertop seams, dishwasher lines, and window sills after heavy rain floods their outdoor nests. Pavement ants push little fans of soil out of expansion joints in driveways and sidewalks, so we see them most in Halfway, Long Meadow, and Highland Manor where slab seams and concrete stoops sit right against the foundation. Carpenter ants are the big black ones, often in Fountainhead and along the wooded edges near Antietam Creek, and they follow moisture: a leaking gutter, a rotting deck ledger board, a soffit under an overhanging maple. In the North End Historic District and older South End rowhouses, stone and brick foundations give ants a dozen mortar-joint routes into a basement, which is why sealing matters more downtown than anywhere else in Washington County.

Here is the trade-off between the two approaches. Baiting works with the ants instead of against them — workers carry a slow-acting bait back to the queen and brood, which is the only way to actually end an odorous house ant colony. It is not instant. You may see more ants for 2-4 days as recruitment builds, then a steep drop over 1-2 weeks. Contact sprays do the opposite: they kill the ants you can see in seconds, and with odorous house ants they frequently trigger budding, where the colony splits into satellite nests and you get trails in two new rooms instead of one. That is the exact reason a hardware-store aerosol often makes month two worse than month one. We use targeted perimeter treatment where it earns its keep — the outdoor foundation band, mulch beds, and stoop seams — and keep interior work to baits and dust in voids where children and pets are not in contact.

Carpenter ants get a different visit. Finding the nest matters more than treating the trail, because carpenter ants hollow out wood that is already damp. We check gutter lines, the roof valley, the deck attachment, and any window header that has been leaking, and we tell you what needs a carpenter or a gutter cleaning even though that is not work we do. Fixing the water is what keeps them from coming back.
